Mt. Rainier View
A one-story 1950’s house in View Ridge needed more room for a family and had a view of Mt. Rainer, but only from the roof. The design appears to float a second story by encircling the first floor with a band of ceiling height windows. A floating stair connects the completely renovated first floor and new second floor. From the second floor to the roof deck, the stair becomes exterior, eliminating the need for a bulkhead on the roof. A wood slat screen acts as a guardrail and provides privacy for the family as well as ever changing patterns of light on the interior.
